So Not Christmas Yet

By PIIA METTÄLÄ

This Christmas will be more yellow than red.
And black and white.
At least when it comes to decorations that slowly sneak in.

I don’t normally decorate the house for the Christmas.
This year, however, it started already in October.

Finding myself making Christmas tree ornaments.
Black and white. Striped.
Simple geometric shapes, taking the shape of Himmeli,
the traditional straw decoration.
Me, who swore never to introduce that in my house.

How about the little men with pointy hats, gnomes, or whatever.
Santa’s little helpers.
Christmas decorations like that are not my style. Or so I thought.
But I see a picture of a crocheted gnome. And I had to make it.
The black cute mustache got me. And my hook was busy again.

So. It is not Christmas yet. Not even December.
But I sit on my couch with ornaments and gnomes,
eating delicious Christmas pastry with prune jam.
And I am thinking.
Maybe. Just maybe.
It is ok to go nuts for one Christmas.
Next year, I will wait until December.

But I won’t listen any Christmas songs.

Not until it is Christmas.
No jingle bells. Or Rudolph.

The red nose.
Reindeer.
Had a very shiny nose…
Oh my.
