Children fashion design that is quirky, stylish and tons of fun? Yes, we are talking about Marjut Rahkola, the Finnish designer behind the famous Cat Dress (Kissamekko in Finnish) from the Marimekko 2012 Spring collection. I had a rare opportunity to meet Marjut in a cafe and take a look into exclusive pieces you can not find in any store yet. Creativity knows no boundaries. Marjut becomes inspired by her surroundings and she loves designing clothes to her friends’ children. Marjut describes her creative flow, “When I have an idea, I will work on it during the night and in the morning. Once it is finished I will put them on my own children. It is a success when they figure out what I am trying to create. With the Shark Dress the girls started swinging their tails and saying, ‘Look! I am a shark!’ And that makes me happy!”
The shark dress and some other cute dresses by Marjut Rahkola we used in our “Arctic Air” fashion spread. (“The O bag” by Irene Mikaela and leather shoes by Emmi Malmström) As a mother of six children (yes, total of 6! 2 girls and 4 boys), Marjut is slender, tall, stylish, young and also a super cool mamma! She truly understands the psyche of children and shows it in the forms of her design. She uses simple colors, preferring black and white, and shapes the clothes in the most astounding ways. All I can think is, how she comes up with such exciting shapes? Take a peek into our exclusive images of her latest pieces, which are not produced at the moment. These are unique pieces and I am honored to photograph them. With amazing nordic designed wallpapers and wall-stickers by FERM living as backdrop. Model: Elli / Styling: Elina Felin
